Located on the Atlantic coast and sometimes called the "Venice of America" because of its 165-mile canal system, Fort Lauderdale has much to offer residents and visitors alike. A stay in a five star Fort Lauderdale hotel means proximity to the breathtaking beaches and a touch of home as well. Ft. Lauderdale began as a series of three forts during the Second Seminole War and got its name from Major William Lauderdale, who commanded the soldiers that constructed the forts. The city itself was built fifty years after the resolution of the conflict in 1842. In 1915, Fort Lauderdale became the county seat of Broward County.
Largely because of its balmy temperatures, which average about 64 degrees or higher year round, the city sees about ten million visitors annually. Most visitors elect to come during the winter and early spring. Residents refer to these people as "snow birds" because the northerners, like birds, like to fly south for the winter. Tourists enjoy the warmth, as temperatures are almost always higher than 40 degrees, even in the winter. Tourism is a major source of income for the area. There are a number of languages spoken in Fort Lauderdale, namely English, Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian, Italian, Creole and French, which makes it a worldly destination for many cultures.
Besides tourism, boating is a major draw for the area. The coastal town manufactures and maintains yachts. This industry employs 109,000 jobs countywide. This area is also a popular destination for said yachts due to its closeness to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Forty-two thousand boats call the city their home port in 100 boatyards and marinas.
Many corporations are based in the area. In total, eighteen thousand people work for American Express, Motorola, Tenet Healthcare, The Continental Group and Maxim Integrated Products. Three million visitors alone come for conventions at the 600,000 square foot Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. It offers many amenities such as high-speed Internet access and the Breezin' Java/Cyber Cafe.
The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop is an indoor/outdoor flea market and boasts a 13-screen drive-in movie theater. This is the largest drive-in theater in the world.
There are miles of beaches, of course, but also parks, nature trails, places to canoe, picnic and camp. Music lovers flock to Downtown Fort Lauderdale's Riverwalk for the SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch on the first Sunday of each month. The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival, the Bank of America Wine and Culinary Celebration, which features samples from 200 wineries and 300 restaurants from around the world and the New Times International Beerfest are popular annual events. Ft. Lauderdale also hosts many home shows, a July 4th celebration, art festivals and boat shows.
The Ocean Fest Dive and Adventure Sports Expo is a weekend-long celebration of all things dive related, benefiting various environmental and non-profit organizations. The festival features over 150 dive-related exhibits, a silent auction and demonstrations for beginners. The celebration also features an underwater treasure hunt, which is noteworthy considering Fort Lauderdale is the site of one of the only living reefs accessible from shore in the continental U.S.
The Hollywood Beach Clambake features free, live music and fresh seafood on the beach. Of course, there are many restaurant options at a five star Fort Lauderdale hotel as well. Visitors can find a variety of food genres to suit their palate.
For more hands-on fun, there is the Museum of Discovery and Science, which boasts over 200 interactive exhibits including a simulated trip to Mars, the opportunity to pet a 12-foot snake and a 5-story IMAX screen. This facility is geared toward kids under seven years of age.
The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic complex, which is found at the International Swimming Hall of Fame, is in the city as well. It is open to the city's residents, but also hosts many national and international competitions. This was where, in 2002, Michael Phelps set his world record in the 400m individual medley. There is also a museum, research library and theater on site.
Such celebrities as Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's Restaurants and Scotty Pippen of the NBA, hail from Fort Lauderdale.
Whatever the purpose or pleasure, nothing adds to a vacation experience like a five star Fort Lauderdale hotel.
